Canada Shipping Questions & Answers

To ensure your shipments move as quickly and easily as possible-- – and to make your job easier – here’s a quick and easy listing of all the documents you’ll need.

Q. What is required to ship to Canada?

A. Standard Bill of Lading

  • Show full name and address information for both the shipper and consignee, including postal and zip codes. Phone number, fax number, and contact name of your customer are not required, but can be very helpful to the carrier and customs broker.
  • Show the name of your customer’s customs broker, including phone and fax number if available.
  • Give accurate information about the shipment/pieces weight, and description. Piece count is extremely important. 100 pieces in 10 cartons must show as 10 cartons that contain 100 pieces each.

Three Copies of Your Commercial Invoice

  • Show the transportation value of the entire shipment.
  • The value of each item in the shipment must be shown separately.

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Certificate of Origin

  • For repeat shipments to the same consignee, a blanket certification may be required.
  • Please enclose documents in an envelope with your customer’s name and their customs broker’s name on the outside. Attach the envelope to the bill of lading.
  • Further information on customs issues should be requested from your customs broker.
